Both his parents were killed and despite no sign of a seatbelt for Koen, he was found with a large bruise across his abdominal area. It was later found that the bruise was caused by his mother holding him extremely tightly during the crash, which saved his life. As a result of the accident, Koen suffered severe brain damage. Marina and Albie Lombard decided to dedicate their lives to taking care of their nephew. Since then, Koen has taken a central role in the Lombard family. Thirty-four years later, Koen still needs constant care.
